How to Measure for Pinch Pleat Curtains: A Complete Guide by THREE GIRLS

Choosing the right curtain size is the first step to transforming a room. When it comes to pinch pleat draperies—elegant, timeless, and perfectly tailored—getting the measurements right is especially important. At THREE GIRLS, we want to make the process easy and stress-free. Whether you already have a curtain rod or are starting from scratch, this step-by-step guide will help you confidently measure for your custom curtains.

Scenario 1: Curtain Rod Is Already Installed

Step 1: Measure the Width
Start by using a tape measure to determine the full width of your installed curtain rod. This will serve as the reference width for your custom drapery panels.

Pro Tip: Always measure from end to end of the rod—not the window frame—since the curtains will cover the rod span.

Step 2: Measure the Height
Next, measure from the bottom of the curtain rod to the floor. This is your reference height for the curtain panel.

🪄 Every THREE GIRLS panel comes with adjustable plastic hooks, making it easy to fine-tune the hanging height after installation.

Step 3: Use the Curtain Size Calculator
Once you have both width and height, go to our Curtain Size Calculator and select “Rod Installed.” Simply enter your numbers, and we’ll instantly generate the recommended curtain size for you—no math required!

Scenario 2: Curtain Rod Not Installed

Don’t have a curtain rod up yet? No problem. This section is for you.

Step 1: Plan the Installation Placement

  • Height: For a taller, more elegant window look, install your rod 8–10 inches above the top of your window frame.

  • Width: Extend the rod 8–10 inches beyond each side of the window. This gives the curtains room to stack neatly when open, keeping your windows bright and uncovered.

Use a pencil or masking tape to mark the planned rod placement, then measure the full span between the outermost marks.

Step 2: Use the Curtain Size Calculator
Select the “Rod Not Installed” option in our calculator, input your planned width and height, and you’ll receive your customized sizing recommendation.

Understanding Fullness for Pinch Pleats

What makes THREE GIRLS pinch pleat curtains so luxurious? It’s all about fabric fullness.

We use a standard 200% fullness, which means we use twice the width of fabric for every panel to create full, rich pleats that hold their shape over time.

✅ You don’t need to calculate this yourself. Just choose your desired finished panel width (the width when fully extended), and we’ll handle the rest during production.

Choosing the Right Curtain Length

Curtain length changes the feel of a room—make sure you pick the one that suits your style.

  • Floating: Curtain stops just above the floor (½”–1”)—great for a clean, modern look.

  • Touching: Curtain grazes the floor—balanced and timeless.

  • Puddling: Curtain pools slightly on the floor (2”–6”)—ideal for a dramatic or romantic look.

To measure, simply take the distance from the bottom of your curtain rod (or hooks) to the floor. The adjustable hooks we provide allow for minor tweaks in length after hanging.
