THREE GIRLS Custom Curtain Measurement and Selection Guide
At THREE GIRLS, we offer an easy and customized curtain experience that enhances both the aesthetics and functionality of your home. With accurate measurements and the right curtain styles, you can effortlessly elevate the look of your space. Here's everything you need to know about measuring for and selecting your curtains.
Step 1: Measure Your Window or Door
Accurate measurements are essential for ensuring your curtains fit perfectly.
- Curtain Rod or Track Height: For a taller room appearance, we recommend installing your curtain rod 1-2 inches below the ceiling.
- Curtain Rod Width: The rod should extend 8-12 inches beyond the window frame on each side. This not only lets more light into the room but also makes the window appear larger while allowing the curtains to hang neatly.
- Stacking Space: Ensure you leave enough space for the curtains to stack neatly when drawn open.
Step 2: Determine the Width of Each Curtain Panel
The width of each panel will depend on your chosen curtain style.
-
Flat Top Styles (e.g., metal rings, tie-top): Panel width = Rod or track width × Fullness ÷ Number of panels
-
Pleated Styles (e.g., pinch pleats): Panel width = Rod or track width ÷ Number of panels
Note: If you haven't installed the rod or track yet, add 8-12 inches to the width of your window for a rough estimate.
Step 3: Determine the Length of Each Curtain Panel
Curtain length directly affects the aesthetic of the entire room, so precise measurement is crucial.
-
Measuring Curtain Length: Measure from the desired hanging point (or the top of the curtain rod) down to the floor. Curtains should either hover 1/2 inch above the floor, gently touch the floor, or puddle naturally.
-
Installation Position: Hanging the curtain rod 1-2 inches below the ceiling will help make the room feel taller. A classic design is to install the rod 6 inches above the window.
Curtain Style Selection
Choose the right curtain style to complement your windows and space.
- Single Panel: A single curtain that can be pulled from left or right, suitable for one-way operation. Can also be used as a fixed decorative curtain.
- Double Panels: Two equal panels that open from the center, ideal for creating a symmetrical look.
Fullness and Pleat Effect
The fullness of your curtains will impact their overall appearance. Select the right level of fullness for the desired pleat effect.
- 1X Fullness: Curtains are flat—generally not recommended.
- 1.5X Fullness: Suitable for decorative curtains that are rarely drawn.
- 2.0X Fullness: Highly recommended for beautiful, soft pleats.
- 2.5X Fullness: Ideal for deep pleats and a rich, luxurious appearance, especially with sheer curtains.
Example: If you use a 84-inch wide curtain for a 42-inch wide window, the fullness will be 2X, giving your curtains a beautiful wave-like effect.
Choosing Curtain Length
The length of your curtains is essential for both the aesthetic of your space and ease of maintenance.
- 1/2 Inch Above the Floor: Clean, sleek look that's easy to maintain. Ideal for homes with children or pets as it prevents dust buildup.
- Just Touching the Floor: For a streamlined, modern look.
- Puddling Effect: Curtains that naturally pool 2-4 inches on the floor for a luxurious feel. However, this style is not recommended for curtains that are frequently opened and closed, as it can accumulate dust.
Stacking Width
Stacking width refers to the amount of space the curtains occupy on either side of the window when fully drawn open. Make sure to allow enough space for the curtains to open fully without disrupting the aesthetic.
Fabric Selection and Seaming
If your curtains need to be larger than the standard sizes, you can opt for rotation or seaming to extend the fabric:
- Fabric Roll Width: Standard fabric rolls are typically 112 inches wide, which is suitable for most curtains.
- Rotation: A technique used to increase curtain length for windows that exceed 110 inches in height.
- Seaming: When both the width and length exceed 110 inches, two fabric pieces may be sewn together. The seams are carefully crafted to look seamless, ensuring a polished and professional finish.
With these straightforward steps and accurate measurements, you can easily create the perfect custom curtains for your home, enhancing both beauty and comfort. If you need any assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer service team at support@threegirls.com

QFAs
How to Measure Pleated Curtains?
For pleated curtains, we recommend that the curtain width be 1x the width of your curtain rod or track. The length should be measured from the eyelet ring where the curtain hooks are attached.
How to Understand the Width of Pleated Curtains?
For pleated curtains, the panel width refers to the width where the pleats have already been set. By default, the fabric fullness is 2 times the finished curtain width, used to create the pleats and folds. The panel width is measured from the end of the left pleat to the end of the right pleat.
2x Fullness: Suitable for pleated curtain styles.
Should I Consider the Fullness for the Pleated Header Style?
For permanently sewn pleated styles, we typically make them with 200% fullness. For example, if the length of your curtain rod or track is 80 inches, you can order two panels, each 40 inches wide, for pleated curtains or custom pleated header styles. If you prefer more fullness, you can also order wider panels.
What is Curtain Stacking Width?
The curtain stacking width refers to the amount of space that curtains occupy when they are fully drawn open or pushed to one side of the window or doorway.
The stacking width of THREE GIRLS curtains varies depending on the fabric and header style, typically accounting for 20%-30% of the width you ordered.
Do I need to purchase hooks for the pleated style?
Orders come with plastic adjustable hooks, which allow you to adjust the curtain length within a 3-inch range. You will still need to purchase curtain rings separately.
Is there an explanation for the number of pleats for pleated curtains?
7 pleats for 40" width
10 pleats for 50" width
13 pleats for 72" width
15 pleats for 84" width
19 pleats for 100" width
21 pleats for 110" width
23 pleats for 120" width
27 pleats for 150" width
The number and spacing of pleats may vary slightly depending on the length of your track or pole.
What size requires fabric seams for curtains?
For pinch pleat, grommet, and rod pocket curtains, when the finished curtain length exceeds 108 inches, curtains with a width of less than 56 inches will not have fabric seams, while curtains with a width greater than 56 inches will have a vertical fabric seam. When the finished curtain length is less than 108 inches, curtains of any width will not have fabric seams.
What is the maximum size for Memory Training curtains?
For Memory Training curtains, the maximum size is:
Width: 160 inches
Length: 246 inches
Curtains that exceed these maximum dimensions cannot undergo memory shape training.
Is memory shaping suitable for all header styles?
Not all header styles support memory shaping. The following header styles do not support memory training:
Rod pocket
Grommet
These styles are designed to maintain their intended look through their construction and attachment method, making memory shaping unnecessary.
Do I need to do memory shaping for my curtains?
Memory shaping is an essential technique designed to help your curtains maintain their shape and pleats, ensuring that they stay neat and keep their lasting effect.
If you want your curtains to retain their pleated shape and maintain a clean, tailored appearance, it’s recommended to have them memory-shaped. This technique helps preserve the visual appeal and structure of your curtains over time.
